Advent is a season when we take time to notice the places in the world that are in need of God’s grace. It’s a time to remember the promise that God will put all things right, and to notice the things that need to be put right.
What hurts are you hoping for God to heal this season?
What injustices are you praying for God to address?
What suffering are you praying for God to overcome?
Part of what it means to be part of God’s church and to follow Jesus is that we are invited to join Jesus in the work he is doing to make all things new. So, as you think about the hurts you are hoping for God to heal, Advent is also an opportunity to ask yourself how you are going to join God in the work of healing. What are you doing to comfort the brokenhearted, to join in the work of justice, to help bring hope to the hopeless and protection to the vulnerable? How are you using your time, your energy, your voice, your resources, and more to help spread hope?
Advent is a season of hope. It is a time to trust in God’s promises – to remember that God is at work to bring transformation and new life. And it is also a time to remember that part of our calling is to spread hope, embody joy, and put love into action.
God is at work to make all things new. And we get to join in that work. That’s part of the story of Advent.
