Hope Is Born - Advent 2020

December 2 – Christmas Lights, The More the Merrier

Written by Will MacKay

Christmas is lights, and the more the merrier.  Christmas light touring is a recent tradition in our family. I guess it started with our son, TJ’s, first vocal reaction to our Christmas light many years ago. It has morphed from him pointing down side streets and shouting “wights…wights…” to heartfelt trips through neighborhoods while drinking coco in travel mugs.

For some, Christmas lights are tacky. I get it, but I see them as hope. I see the lights as an outward expression of the light of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

From the first chapter of John,

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.  He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of Godchildren born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

So, from the simple Christmas candle to the Clark Griswald’esque display, I see the greater faith family in every light of the season, and, to me, they are beautiful.
