Each morning we will send a link (by text) that will take you to a reading from the Book of Luke and reflection that is meant to help you get into the spirit of Christmas – and to help you pay attention to God.

Introduction to the Haymarket Church Advent Devotional Guide
Advent is a season of preparation, waiting, longing, and most importantly, hope. For centuries, Christians have set aside the four weeks before Christmas as a sacred time to slow down, pay attention, and prepare our hearts for the arrival of Jesus—the One who brings hope to the weary, peace to the overwhelmed, love to the forgotten, and joy to the world. In a season often marked by hurried schedules and crowded calendars, Advent gently invites us to breathe, to make room, and to rediscover the wonder of God coming close.
This year at Haymarket Church, we are journeying through the Gospel of Luke, reading one chapter each day through the season of Advent. If you read one chapter a day, you will get through the whole gospel of Luke by December 24th. Luke’s Gospel gives us one of Scripture’s most detailed accounts of Jesus’ birth and places particular emphasis on God’s compassion, mercy, and care for the outsider—messages we deeply need in this season.
To help guide your reading and reflection, each daily devotional includes:
- A song suggestion to help you prepare your heart.
- A Scripture assignment (one chapter from Luke each day).
- An extra lesson for those who want to go deeper. I have prepared links from The Bible Project that have very accessible summary videos as well as other commentaries in the form of podcasts and other mediums found on YouTube.
- A thematic reflection connecting the day’s reading to the weekly Advent theme—Hope, Peace, Love, or Joy.
- A simple journal prompt and spiritual practice to help you reflect and live out the theme in your daily life.
You can use this devotional on your own, with your family, or in a small group. You’ll receive each day’s message via Text in Church, and it will direct you to the full guide which will be available on our website. The goal is to give you a complete framework to guide your devotional time.
Our prayer is that as we journey through Advent and the gospel of Luke together, God will reshape our hearts so that when Christmas comes, we won’t simply celebrate a holiday—we will celebrate the deep truth that God has come to dwell with us, as Emmanuel, God with us, and that changes everything.
May this Advent season be for you a time of holy expectation, renewed faith, and surprising grace. Let’s begin the journey together. Prepare the way….
