Day 3 – Unexpected Blessings

Written by Al Kales

Advent is the time of the year when we look to God in the form of Christ to join us here on earth. I grew up in a Christian family, but it wasn’t until I was in my early forties, that I had my advent and came to know Christ as my Lord and Savior. Soon a neighbor invited us to try their church and we found our home at St. Thomas UMC.

The blessings of my life have been many and include a perfect loving wife, three daughters, three son-in-laws and seven grandchildren. God has blessed me with four years in the US Navy as a weather tech, twenty one years with Eastern Airlines, twenty one years with American Airlines, both as an aircraft mechanic.

Today in retirement, the real blessings come in unexpected ways. I envisioned a retirement of travel, golf, tennis and sipping wine with friends and neighbors. I am finding more joy when I can help a neighbor get back in bed, replace expired smoke detectors, fix deteriorating mailboxes, hanging pictures, driving someone to the doctor or hospital, or even missing part of a Sunday worship to help a neighbor in need.

At Haymarket Church, I used to wish we would sing some of the hymns I grew up with, but now I am loving our contemporary music. Pastor Brian’s sermons are so good, I often ask him to send me a copy. I love our church because we welcome everyone who is searching to be closer to God through Christ Jesus.

My prayers this Advent season are that God will use all of us at Haymarket Church to welcome and lead others to know Jesus and the blessings He has done for all of us.
