Day 7 – The People Who Walked in Darkness Have Seen a Great Light

Written by Josh Thom

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.”Isaiah 9:2

Some of my earliest memories are of the warm glow of Christmas lights in my childhood home. I remember that my parents would turn off the “normal lights” in our house and we would go about our evening routine in the glow of these wonderful lights. Eating dinner, doing homework, laying by our Fisher stove and basking in its warmth, reading stories, getting tucked into bed with a kiss, and then falling fast asleep. I remember that it was wonderful to live in a home with those soft and abundant lights.

As an adult, this tradition continues, but it has an added layer of meaning to me as my faith in Jesus Christ has grown. You see, at this time of year, I find myself leaving for work in the dark and traveling home in the dark. It seems to take “forever.” I sigh when I leave the office and step out into the darkness to make my way home. As my commute ends, I pull into my driveway, crest the hill and there is the house, light up and adorned in soft lights. The commuter driving in darkness has seen a great light!

I love coming home and into those lights! My memories of the Christmas lights in my childhood home wash over me and they comingle with a joy in knowing the I get to experience Christmas lights anew each year with my kids. So, I get out of the car, walk into the house, and say, “I’m home!” In that moment, I am blessed and thankful, and I am truly home. What peace I find in that moment and what a reminder it is to me of who God is in during this season of Advent.

Prayer for Today: Thank you God, for sending your Son Jesus, a great light, into our darkness and giving us the ability to have peace in our life and a home with you. Amen.
