Scripture: 2 Samuel 11:1-15, 11:26-12:13a

Today we are telling a story that has become a literary classic – the story of David and Bathsheba.  David is supposed to be out leading his soldiers in battle, but instead, he is at home, in his palace, enjoying the fruits of their hard work.  He takes advantage of Bathsheba (the story makes it seem as if this was a non-consensual encounter), she becomes pregnant, and David tries to cover it up.  When he can’t do that, he has her husband murdered.  And then, a prophet speaks to him and informs him that God is not happy.  This is a story of sin, consequences, and where God can be found in the midst of our mess.
