Scripture: Luke 1:26-45; Luke 1:46-55

Mary seems like the least likely person to be at the center of God’s story. She seems an unlikely hero. She is a poor woman from the middle of nowhere. She is not from an impressive family. She doesn’t have any special credentials or achievements. And, yet, God chooses her to give birth to the savior of the world. Through her, hope is born. God choosing Mary – and Mary’s prophetic words in this passage – announce that God’s hope is for everyone, perhaps especially for those who are on the underside, who feel crushed by the weight of this world.
