Scripture: Genesis 22:1-19; Romans 8:31-3920

Today’s Old Testament lesson is one of the hardest in the whole Bible – how can we believe that a loving God would really put someone through that?  This has been a question that the church has asked since its earliest days.  And the church’s answer has been that the story isn’t, first and foremost, about what Abraham did or went through.  The story is, first and foremost, about how God provides a sacrifice – so that we don’t have to.  And the perfect sacrifice God offers is Jesus – who is the perfect Son (who is also God – God freely offering God’s own life!) offered so that we might have life.
