Scripture: 1 Kings 7:8-16; Luke 18:18-23, 19:1-10

We can’t always choose to be happy – sometimes we are faced with situations and circumstances that seem to make happiness impossible.  But we do have the opportunity to choose to step into God’s joy.  The rich young ruler is afraid of giving away his wealth, and so he chooses to live in sadness and fear.  Zachaeus, on the other hand, is willing to give away what he has in order to live in the joy of Jesus.  Zachaeus has discovered the secret of abundance – that it’s not about how much you have – it’s instead about finding the freedom to live generously and trust that God will provide. (This is the secret that the widow of Zarapheth learns when she gives generously to Elijah.)
