Scripture: Isaiah 60:1-6; Matthew 2:1-23
Today we read the story of Jesus’ birth from the Gospel of Matthew and tell the story of the wise men’s visit to Jesus and the Holy Family. We also tell the story of Herod, the king of Judea, who was jealous (and afraid?) of Jesus and who was willing to kill Jesus (and innocent children) in order to protect his own power. In Jesus, we see God’s light entering our world. But, in the response of Herod, we recognize the power of this world’s darkness and the lengths to which we will go to protect our power/security and avoid the revolutionary, world-transforming power of God.
