September 13, 2020 – Everything Happens for a Reason

Rev. Brian Johnson

Scripture: Psalm 139:1-12; Hebrews 4:14-15; Philippians 2:5-11

When a tragedy happens or when life is hard, sometimes we will say this phrase. The problem with this idea is that saying this implies that everything that happens in this life is a “part of God’s plan” for us. In thinking this, there is an implicit evil to who God is and how God loves. Rather than saying this phrase, perhaps we are called to walk through the difficult and dark valleys of this life with others, practicing the presence of God. The primary Christian answer to suffering is not that “everything happens for a reason,” but instead that God has become one of us, and has entered willingly into the suffering of this world.
