At Haymarket Church, we believe that faith shouldn’t be a spectator sport. Loving God isn’t just something that we believe in our heads or feel in our hearts – it is also something that we put into action each day of our lives. Because we believe that Christians should be serving God and others each day, we strive to create and support service opportunities in our church, in our community, and in our world.
Serve at Church
Each Sunday morning is full of opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others at Haymarket Church. Each Sunday morning, we need volunteers for setting up our space, working with sound equipment and technology, putting up signs, teaching children, serving communion, reading Scripture, greeting people as they arrive at worship, helping in our nursery, and more.
There are also various opportunities to serve and “help make church happen” beyond Sunday mornings, including helping with special events like Vacation Bible School, our Spring Service Day, Haymarket Day, events in support of one of our community partners, and more. If you’re interested in helping with any of these opportunities, fill out this form and someone will be in contact with you to help you get involved and make a difference.
Serve Our Community
We believe that the lives of our neighbors should be better because we are Christians. Our church exists for the sake of the Haymarket community, and Haymarket should be a better place because we are here.
To help us meet this goal of making the community a better place, we sponsor and participate in various special events. On Haymarket Day, partner with the Town of Haymarket to help support the event and strengthen our community. Through our partnership with the Sweet Julia Grace Foundation for their annual Christmas caroling event, we spread holiday cheer to a family in need. Working with Haymarket Elementary School, we get to support teachers, students and families – buying gifts for kids at the holidays, providing snacks in the teacher’s lounge, helping families in need, sponsoring a back-to-school lunch at the start of the school year for teachers and staff, and more. On our Spring Service Day, we get to go out and partner with local community service organizations who are already doing great work in our community and make a difference in the lives of others while strengthening existing work in our area (working with at risk seniors, foster children, animals, trail repair, yard work, and more). These are just a few of the many hands-on service opportunities we sponsor as we work to put God’s love into action in our community.
One of the primary ways we make a difference in our community is through our community partnerships. For more information about our various non-profit partners who are making a difference in our community, check out our community partners page. Because God has shared amazing love with us, we believe that we are called to put God’s love into action by sharing it with others.
Serve Our World
God’s love is shared with the whole world, and we believe in putting God’s love into action close to home and around the world. Our mission fund supports a variety of good work around the globe and close to home. In addition, because we are a United Methodist Church, we are partners in supporting the global work of the United Methodist Church – funding bishops around the world, education in Africa, training of local aid workers, creating new churches, training new pastors, providing scholarships to at-risk students, and all sorts of other important work in churches and communities.
Hands-on opportunities for service around the world include special events like our Stop Hunger Now Meal packaging event, during which we spend a few hours packaging thousands of meals to be distributed to hungry people around the globe. These meals are typically associated with disaster relief and education programs, thereby helping to maximize their impact.
In addition, we frequently send various teams on longer-term (usually about a week) service projects. These teams include adult teams traveling to other countries to build homes and distribute food, adult teams traveling in the United States to do disaster relief, teams of teenagers traveling to Appalachia to repair homes and build relationships, and more. These opportunities are chances for us to grow in faith and share God’s love by putting faith into action.
